Olin hyvin pettynyt Anime-lehden uusimpaan numeroon. Kantta katsomatta olisi melkein voinut luulla lukevansa hämmentävästi vessapaperille painettua Pelaajaa, niin monta sivua käsitteli konsolipelejä isolla kuvituksella. Tarkempi perehtyminen paljasti, että pelkästään päätoimittaja ei ollut vaihtunut vaan lähes koko toimitus vaikutti menneen uusiksi.
Goro Miyazakin Maameren tarinoiden arvostelua lukiessani ihmettelin, miksi siihen ei ollut merkitty kirjoittajaa. Saman havaitsin joidenkin muidenkin osioiden kohdalla. Myöhemmin luin, että nämä jutut ovat aiemmin brittiläisessä Neossa ilmestyneitä (lisenssi)käännöksiä. Mutta tässä vaiheessa oli jo tapahtunut muutakin: postilaatikkooni oli yllättäen kolahtanut Japan Popin näytenumero.
Hetken mietin onko Anime-lehti vaihtanut nimeään, mutta koska sen viimeisin numero oli ilmestynyt niin vähän aikaa sitten, totesin tämän olevan epätodennäköistä. Apinalaatikosta bongasin tuttuja nimiä ja myös lehden rakenne vaikutti kovasti tutulta — joskin sisältö oli laadukkaalle paperille painettu.
Siinä missä Anime-lehden numero 22 oli unohtunut pöydälle odottamaan lukemisen jatkamista, luin Japan Popin ensimmäisen numeron lähes yhdeltä istumalta. Kun sen jälkeen palasin Animen pariin, erot näyttivät entistä räikeämmille. Tässä vaiheessa olin kuitenkin tilanteen tasalla. Otaku-blogi oli valistanut minua paitsi Anime-lehden muuttuneesta tilanteesta myös uudesta tulokkaasta.
Tilanteen valossa symppaan Animen toimituskuntaa. Kun numero on saatava kasaan todennäköisesti tuskallisella aikataululla ja uusien ihmisten voimin, toki kirjoittajat kirjoittavat siitä minkä parhaiten tuntevat. Pelaajan avustajien (oletan) kohdalla tämä luonnollisesti on pelit, eikä aihe mikään huono teema Animelle ole. Neosta käännetyt jutut on valittu suomalaisille(kin) ajankohtaisista aiheista kuten Maamerestä ja Peach Girlin animeversiosta. Pakollinen aihe eli Animecon on käsitelty varmaankin “parhaan mukaan”. Kuvat ovat kauniita (Final Fantasyt, ’nuff said) eivätkä liian kovaa kilju olevansa täytemateriaalia.
Kokonaisuutena numero ei vedonnut minuun eikä joukossa ollut yhtäkään artikkelia joka olisi ylittänyt mittarini kohdan keskiverto, mutta olosuhteet huomioiden katson uuden toimituksen suoriutuneen hommasta säällisesti. Tässä vaiheessa on liian varhaista todeta mitään sen kummempaa Anime-lehden tilasta. Seuraava ja sitä seuraava numero näyttävät mitä tapahtuu esimerkiksi minun kestotilaukselleni.
Entä sitten Japan Pop? Tämä selkäänpuukotuksen hedelmä tai sorron yöstä nousevan laatutoimituksen uusi tuleminen on ensimmäisen numeronsa perusteella erinomaista kamaa. Toki pitää paikkansa, että se muistuttaa Anime-lehden aikaisempaa inkarnaatiota tyyliltään ja sisällöltään. Toisaalta tässä tapauksessa lehti on “edelleen” tekijöidensä näköinen (vaikka päätoimittaja onkin toinen). Animen entinen tekijäkaarti on ottanut alkuperäisistä ideoistaan kaiken irti myös uusien kansien sisällä. Perusajatukset ovat vanhat tutut, mutta niitä on hiottu, kiillotettu ja somistettu entistä sulavammiksi. Panin lehden kestotilaukseen hetkeäkään epäröimättä.
Merkittävimmäksi eroksi näiden kahden suomalaisen japanilaista populaarikulttuuria käsittelevän lehden tuoreimman numeron epäreilussa vertailussa ei nouse nimipudottelun määrä vaan sen konteksti. Anime jätti minut kylmäksi siinä missä Japan Pop hohkaa asiantuntevaa fanirakkautta.
Hesari kertoo Anna Keski-Rahkosen kiinnostavalta vaikuttavasta anoreksiatutkimuksesta. Otsikko korostaa “kasvanutta” paranemisprosenttia (entisestä viidestäkymmenestä seitsemäänkymmeneen prosenttiin sairastavista), mutta tekstistä käy ilmi myös sairastavien määrän “kasvu” (yhdestä 2,2 prosenttiin tai jopa viiteen prosenttiin suomalaisnaisista). Kuten työttömyysluvut, nämäkin “muutokset” liittyvät kriteereiden muuttamiseen. Aiempiin tutkimuksiin kun on otettu mukaan vain sairaalahoidossa olevat potilaat. Jälleen kerran olisi ollut kiva, jos lehti olisi vaivautunut mainitsemaan tutkimuksesta jotain tarkempaa kuin tekijän. Tietokulma sentään kertoo, että “vastavalmistunut tutkimus tehtiin Helsingin yliopiston kansanterveystieteen laitoksella kaksostutkimusyksikössä, ja se julkaistaan arvostetussa American Journal of Psychiatry -lehdessä.”
Runaways on turvassa. Joss Whedonin rupeaman jälkeen tämän Marvelin ihastuttavan teinipoppoon kirjoittamiseen tarttuu Strangers in Paradisesta tuttu Terry Moore! Kuultu suoraan sedältä itseltään.
Joidenkin asioiden ei uskoisi koskaan tapahtuvan, mutta niin ne vaan etenee kun tarpeeksi kauan odottaa. Punakhmerien kidutuskeskuksen johtajalle luettiin syytteet 70-luvulla tehdyistä hirmuteoista. Kang Kek Leu on odotellut oikeudenkäyntiä vankeudessa vuodesta 1999. Toisaalla Britannian armeijan 38-vuotinen operaatio Pohjois-Irlannissa päättyi. Viikoiksi mentiin mutta sitten kävi niin kuin kävi.
Britanniasta puheen ollen, Edinburgh International Festival järjestetään tänä vuonna kuudennenkymmenennen kerran, mutta ei-yllättävästi suurin kohunaiheuttaja löytyy The Edinburgh Festival Fringen puolelta. Jihad the Musicalin ei tarvinne pelätä mainostuksen vähyyttä. Hittibiisit I Wanna Be Like Osama (myös videona!) ja Turned and Run ovat tarjolla kotisivun mediaosiossa. Voisi luulla, että Silk Circle Productions on perehtynyt spekseihin (ja saattaisipa “Omstart!” istua aiheeseen eri hyvin).

The best news of the day year: Alan Johnston has been released after 114 days — almost four months — of captivity. This brave journalist was kidnapped in March in Gaza Strip, having been the only international correspondent still working there.
More information on the kidnappers and the release is in Hamas role in Johnston’s release by Martin Asser.
I was in Gaza for three years, and I know very well what Palestinian culture is, and the extraordinary warmth and hospitality - especially of Gaza.
I knew that the handful of people that kidnapped me were a complete aberration - something completely other.
My memories of Gaza will be very much of the best kind, despite what happened to me.
It’s true that the kidnappings - I covered 27 of them here, almost all of them were over in about 12 days.
I knew that there was one very dangerous group. I knew about them, and I was always afraid of them. They struck first last August, and I was worried that they might get me one day, and they indeed did.
The kidnappers seemed very comfortable and very secure in their operation - until a couple of weeks ago when it became clear that Hamas would be in charge of the security situation on their own here, and after that the kidnappers were much more nervous.
It was appalling really… not to be able to report on the extraordinary turmoil, the events that I could hear going on, the fighting in the streets around the hideout, for days on end and I just knew the scale of things that were happening.
It’s the biggest story since I’ve been in Gaza, but I couldn’t utter a word.
I’m celebrating today.

Today has been the 100th day of the BBC journalist Alan Johnston being missing.
I listened to his stories of Gaza in From Our Own Correspondent. I was shocked and heartbroken to hear he’s been kidnapped. I feel for this thing, not only because I greatly respect Johnston, but also because kidnappings are a very real and serious threat in unstable areas of the world.
People are not designed to live in fear or for fear. Only suffering comes out of it. Let Alan Johnston be the symbol against it.
Let him be a living symbol.

I’m not concerned here about whether 300 could be interpreted as pro-Iraq-War propaganda, which, well, maybe it could and maybe it couldn’t. Here’s an interesting fact for you: the Nazis made historical propaganda films for their own people that they couldn’t show in Poland or Czechoslovakia because of the danger that the Poles or Czechs would identify the “bad guys” with the Germans and not with the British. These films were made intentionally as pro-German, anti-British propaganda, but the nature of fiction is such that there was room for the opposite interpretation — room for a Polish cinemagoer to read the story as supporting their own country’s resistance movement against the Germans. Without having seen 300, it’s impossible to say whether it’s likely to come across to the kind of audience it’s likely to have as being pro-war. That it celebrates bloodshed and manly warriors beating the living crud out of each other does not surprise me; that it apparently manages to be more gynophobic than the original comic must surely rank as some kind of achievement. But that is something that others who are angrier and more articulate than I am can verbally eviscerate the filmmakers for. I’m not concerned with that here.
